The Gay Community in Buenos Aires
In response to the prior post on attitudes toward gays in Argentina, I would say that certainly Buenos Aires is a gay friendly destination. Besides having one of the only two "gay hotels" in the world (the Axel--which jokingly calls itself "hetero-friendly"), there are many gay clubs, gay and lesbian activities and events, not to mention the fact that Argentina hosted the Gay World Cup (of soccer) in 2008. There is even a gay wine store in Buenos Aires with its own Gay Wine label. Obviously many gay friendly activities, organizations and businesses exist here. Negative attitudes toward gays and derrogatory language, however, are quite common as well. Calling someone a "puto" or "maricon" can be heard at any sporting event, just like in the US. I would say that the two cultures are very similar in this respect. In the provinces also, much like in rural America, attitudes are much more oppresive. This is probably what leads many gays to flock to bigger, more gay friendly cities in general around the world. With a larger community that is socially more liberal and accepting, life is easier.

And more good news, civil unions here are permitted! Way to go, especially in such a Catholic country.

Dman!I am Portuguese and I am still pondering about moving towards Buenos Aires. I thought Argentinians were pretty much like us, Spaniards and Italians and did not favoured gayness much.
You see, it's not usual for one to go walking through Buenos Aires and see homossexual males, is it?
If so, maybe I'll just stay here...
it seems to be that many argentine men are just so hormoned up they dont seem to mind much who they are with. it is a very open city. while the axel hotel gives itself five stars.....usually someone else rates you. there are any number of gay hotels in the world. not just two. i ve stayed at two different gay hotels in montreal and onee in santiago de chile. am sure there are more. the only trouble with being gay and foreign in ba, is that its almost impossible to tell friendship and love, from someones need for money.
It's alright "Alfonso Henriques".. Stay where you are. we don't want homophobic or discriminating people around... Cheers! And Hurray for Buenos Aires and our 21st century mentality. God bless the "Open Minded"...

Martin.
Thanks to the common sense, more and more states in USA and that will propagate to the rest of the world, are not allowing gay marriages that corrupt the most basic meaning of society.
Also for FOURPOINT, you are completely wrong, what the gays did in Tierra del Fuego was a circus, which is not legal at the federal level.
